Childhood asthma and other wheezing disorders
Michael
Silverman, ed. Second edition. Published by Oxford University Press, 2002. ISBN
0-340-76318-3. Contains 496 pages. Price NZ$440.00
When one considers how common childhood asthma is,
it is surprising that doctors have been so badly served with information
about the condition that provides their bread and butter. Most of the
many textbooks, monographs, and indeed the recent New Zealand Asthma
Guidelines, deal with adult asthma and fail to consider those aspects
that are relevant to children. The second edition of Childhood
asthma and other wheezing disorders addresses this deficiency.
It is a comprehensive international textbook dealing with childhood
asthma. The book has been written for health professionals who deal
with wheezy children. The text has a strong clinical emphasis, providing practical
information to enable doctors to deal with both basic and complex clinical
issues that they are likely to face in their everyday practice. These range from
the problems encountered in the management and clinical assessment of wheezy
infants on the one hand, through to teenagers on the other. Important themes,
such as the early life origins of asthma, permeate the book. The book chapters
are written by internationally recognised experts in their fields; the text is
concise and the format and illustrations are attractive enabling the reader to
easily access information. This book is highly recommended for general
practitioners, paediatricians and respiratory physicians.
