Patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery at Auckland City Hospital were followed for 1\u00bd years after surgery. Mori were 8 years younger than Europeans but had more complications and higher mortality; mortality at 1 year 6.3% Mori vs 1.5% European. The reasons for this include Mori presenting later with more advanced heart disease. Steps need to be taken to ensure Mori present earlier for bypass surgery and that risk factors such as smoking rates and diabetes are reduced.
