Although our health care system is one of the best value in the world, our spending on it continues to increase, despite that fact that GDP is not rising in line. There are issues in quality and safety in our healthcare, including rates of preventable harm caused to patients, and unexplained variation in treatments around the country. The Health Quality & Safety Commission was formed in 2010 as a crown agent to influence, encourage, guide and support improvement in health care practice in New Zealand. In this first of a special series on health quality and safety in New Zealand we provide an overview of the Commissions role and focus in improving New Zealand health care.
