Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is an uncommon sexually transmitted infection seldom seen in New Zealand. Outbreaks have been reported in Europe, North America and Australia. There is now evidence that local transmission of this treatable infection may be occurring in New Zealand. The diagnosis should be considered in men who have sex with men and who present with anal discomfort regardless of a history of overseas travel or not. Additional diagnostic testing is required to make the diagnosis of LGV.
